The Rules of Attraction (2002)

The Rules of Attraction is the rare campus movie that doesn’t romanticize youth so much as put it under a harsh, neon-lit microscope, finding dark comedy and real ache in the same breath. Roger Avary directs with a restless, stylish confidence—fractured perspectives, sharp edits, and a pulsing soundtrack that make Camden College feel like a party you can’t quite enjoy but can’t stop watching. James Van Der Beek is unexpectedly terrific as a charismatic mess, and the film’s writing has a bracing honesty about desire, loneliness, and the way people talk past each other even when they’re inches apart. It’s absolutely not for everyone—explicit, bleak, and often emotionally ruthless—but if you’re in the mood for a smart, daring, early-2000s cult drama that bites as hard as it seduces, it delivers.

The Rules of Attraction is trying to be a brutally honest, darkly funny snapshot of rich, aimless college kids spiraling through sex, drugs, and emotional wreckage, and it does capture that early-2000s nihilism with some style. The problem is it often feels like watching a parade of people you wouldn’t want to spend five minutes with, and the storytelling can come off scattered and tonally uneven—one minute it’s biting satire, the next it’s grim trauma, and it doesn’t always earn the shift. If you need characters to root for, a coherent emotional throughline, or comedy that doesn’t lean on cruelty and discomfort, this will likely feel exhausting rather than insightful. Still, if you’re in the mood for a cynical, messy ensemble piece with a few sharp scenes and committed performances (especially from Van Der Beek), it may land as a bleak time capsule rather than a satisfying drama.
