Roger Donaldson keeps the pace brisk and the atmosphere tense, letting The Farm’s training exercises play like psychological chess matches where confidence is just another weapon. Colin Farrell brings an eager, sharp-edged energy to the role, but it’s Al Pacino who really sells the seduction of the CIA world, all charisma and menace wrapped in mentorship. If you like your action with a witty bite and your thrills built on misdirection rather than sheer body count, this one is a very satisfying ride—though viewers who prefer straightforward, no-games espionage may find it a little too fond of mind tricks.

The Recruit wants to be a slick, paranoia-soaked CIA training thriller where every lesson is a lie and every relationship is a test, and on that level it’s competently put together. The problem is it leans so hard on “gotcha” twists that you can start seeing the gears turning, which makes the mystery feel more standard-issue than genuinely mind-bending. The back half can drag as it keeps reshuffling the same deck, so if you need tight pacing and a truly original spy story, this may feel like homework. Still, Pacino’s mentor act has enough bite and Farrell has the right restless energy, so if you’re in the mood for a glossy early-2000s thriller rather than a classic, it can pass the time.
