Daughters of Eve (1985)

Daughters of Eve is the rare film that uses the trappings of horror and crime not for cheap thrills, but to conjure a haunting, lyrical mood—like a fever dream drifting across sun-bleached countryside and unspoken shame. Elwood Perez frames Ilocos with striking, near-desert beauty, letting the landscape’s starkness echo the story’s bruised spirituality and simmering desire, while Sarsi Emmanuelle and Maria Isabel Lopez bring real, uneasy humanity to two sisters pulled in opposite directions by appetite, guilt, and survival. The result is meditative and thematically ambitious, more interested in the psychological aftershocks of violence and dogma than in tidy catharsis. It’s not for everyone—its subject matter is heavy and its pace can feel hypnotically slow—but if you want a visually arresting, morally thorny film that lingers in the mind, this one is worth the trip.

Daughters of Eve is clearly aiming to be a grim, provocative rural morality tale—mixing sexual violence, Catholic guilt, and sibling rivalry to critique (or at least depict) a poisoned community. The problem is that its gender politics can feel ugly and regressive, with the story sometimes drifting toward a “women are to blame” vibe that’s hard to stomach rather than insightful. It’s also unevenly paced: if you’re expecting a steady stream of exploitation-style shocks, you may find yourself waiting through long stretches of melodrama and sermonizing. That said, there’s a raw, sweaty atmosphere and a committed lead performance that give it some bite—just don’t go in expecting subtle social commentary or clean thrills.
