Warm Water Under a Red Bridge is the kind of film only Shōhei Imamura could make: earthy, mischievous, and strangely tender, where everyday life in a seaside town slips into magical realism so casually you almost don’t notice the line has been crossed. It’s aiming for a bawdy, off-kilter fable about reinvention, desire, and small-town life, but the tone can feel slippery—more like a series of peculiar encounters than a story that cleanly “lands.” The central sexual premise is intentionally exaggerated and played for surreal comedy, so if that sounds cringe, juvenile, or simply not your lane, you’ll spend the whole runtime wishing the film would calm down.
