Ghost Ship (2002)

Ghost Ship is the kind of slick, sea-sick horror ride that wins you over on sheer atmosphere: an elegant, abandoned ocean liner drifting in the Bering Sea, all rusted grandeur and bad memories, turned into a haunted house with nowhere to run. Director Steve Beck wrings real dread from the setting—the creaks, the corridors, the yawning machinery—while delivering jolts that are unapologetically nasty when they land, the sort of R-rated mayhem that horror fans still talk about. Gabriel Byrne and Julianna Margulies give the chaos a steady human center, playing pros who feel believable even as the night turns unreal. It’s not for the squeamish or for viewers who need airtight logic, but if you want a moody, high-concept thriller with salty air, sharp shocks, and a wicked streak, this ship is worth boarding.

Ghost Ship wants to be a slick, old-school haunted-vessel mystery with a nasty streak, mixing salvage-greed drama with supernatural mayhem on a gorgeous, rusting set. It absolutely nails a couple of memorable visual moments and the ship itself has real atmosphere, but the story lurches from set piece to set piece with clunky dialogue and logic that feels more convenient than convincing. The scares lean heavily on gore and shock over tension, so if you’re after creeping dread or a coherent whodunit, this will likely feel loud, dumb, and predictable. If you can treat it like a glossy early-2000s “bad decision” horror ride and you’re tolerant of brutality, there’s some pulpy fun to be had; otherwise, your time is better spent elsewhere.
