All or Nothing (2002)

All or Nothing is Mike Leigh at his most bracing and humane, turning the grind of ordinary working-class London into something quietly riveting—less a “plot movie” than a lived-in week where every glance and snapped-off sentence carries history. What makes it special is the compassion beneath the harshness: the film doesn’t flinch from anger, exhaustion, or ugly language, but it keeps finding the bruised tenderness in people who don’t know how to ask for help. Timothy Spall and Lesley Manville are devastatingly real, anchoring an ensemble that feels overheard rather than written, and the result builds to an emotional payoff that’s earned, not engineered. It’s not for everyone—bleak, profane, and sometimes uncomfortable—but if you value honesty in drama and performances that stick to your ribs, this one is absolutely worth the time.

Mike Leigh is clearly aiming for an unvarnished, slice-of-life portrait of working-class families stuck in emotional gridlock, and he gets terrific, painfully human performances out of Timothy Spall and Lesley Manville. The catch is that the film leans hard into bleakness—scene after scene of drab routines, harsh language, and simmering resentment—so if you’re hoping for catharsis, momentum, or even a few breaths of light, you may feel worn down. The pacing is deliberately slow and repetitive, more like eavesdropping on real lives than watching a plotted drama, and that realism can read as “nothing changes” for long stretches. If you can handle relentless misery in exchange for sharp observation and acting that feels uncomfortably true, it’s worth your time; if not, this will likely feel like two-plus hours of emotional heavy lifting.
