Havoc (2005)

Havoc is the kind of bruising, nerve-jangling crime drama that takes a familiar “rich kids playing with fire” premise and refuses to let it stay safely theoretical, pushing it into a place that feels uncomfortably immediate. Barbara Kopple shoots Los Angeles with a gritty, semi-observational edge, and the movie’s best scenes have the tense, documentary-like feeling of watching bad choices calcify into consequences in real time. Anne Hathaway is all-in here, peeling back the thrill-seeking bravado to reveal a young woman desperate to feel something real, and the film’s chill comes from how convincingly it captures that hunger curdling into danger. Fair warning: it’s raw, sexually explicit, and emotionally harsh, so it’s not for everyone—but if you can handle its intensity, it’s an engaging, unsettling watch that lingers.

Havoc wants to be a grimy wake-up call about privileged teens fetishizing “gang” culture and learning, brutally, that real consequences aren’t a costume you can take off. The problem is it often plays like a lurid cautionary tale—more interested in shock and edgy posturing than in giving its characters or themes the depth they need, which can make the uglier material feel exploitative rather than illuminating. If you’re sensitive to explicit sexual content involving teen characters, or you want crime drama that handles class and race with nuance instead of blunt provocation, this will likely leave you cold or angry. Anne Hathaway commits and there are flashes of atmosphere and discomfort that land, but the film’s conventional, underwritten approach keeps it from saying anything as sharp as it thinks it is.
