Showtime (2002)
A spoof of buddy cop movies where two very different cops are forced to team up on a new reality based T.V. cop show.
What people think about Showtime
Showtime is the kind of light, breezy action-comedy that knows its secret weapon: watching Robert De Niro’s granite-serious cop energy collide with Eddie Murphy’s showman sparkle, and letting the sparks do most of the work. The movie has a brisk, popcorn pace and a playful, slightly satirical bite as it pokes at buddy-cop clichés and the absurdity of reality TV turning real danger into “content,” without getting heavy about it. Rene Russo adds a confident, wry presence that keeps the media circus feeling like part of the joke rather than just noise. It’s not for you if you want a razor-sharp spoof or a tightly plotted thriller, but if you’re on the fence and just want charm, zest, and two stars having fun in a knowingly silly setup, it’s an easy watch.
Showtime wants to mash up buddy-cop action with a cheeky jab at reality TV, and on paper pairing De Niro’s dead-serious grit with Eddie Murphy’s showboat charm should be a slam dunk. The problem is the movie rarely commits to being a sharp spoof or a strong action-comedy, so the jokes feel thin and the story keeps sliding into the same predictable beats it’s supposedly mocking. It’s also oddly choppy and formula-driven, like it’s coasting on the premise instead of building real momentum or clever set pieces. If you’re mainly here for the stars riffing off each other, there are a few enjoyable moments and Rene Russo brings some needed energy, but if you want a smart satire or genuinely punchy comedy, this one will likely waste your time.
