Jiří Menzel stages Prague’s glittering hotels and shifting regimes with a storyteller’s mischief, letting whimsy and dark humor sit side by side until you realize you’ve been laughing at something uncomfortably true. Ivan Barnev makes Jan Dítě both irresistible and exasperating, a born observer who learns the rules of wealth and status just well enough to expose how silly, seductive, and costly they are. If you prefer your historical films solemn and straightforward, its absurdist, bittersweet tone may feel offbeat—but if you’re on the fence, this is exactly the kind of intelligent, charming movie that sneaks up on you and stays there.

I Served the King of England is aiming for a wry, fable-like rise-and-fall story about ambition and moral compromise, using a waiter’s eye view to glide through huge historical upheavals. The problem is that the film’s light, almost whimsical tone can feel oddly detached when the surrounding events are anything but, so if you’re expecting real menace, anger, or a hard confrontation with the era’s horrors, you may find it frustratingly mild. It’s also episodic and observational, more interested in irony and human vanity than suspense or emotional punch. That said, if you like satirical European period pieces with strong craft, memorable set pieces, and a reflective “what did it all mean?” finish, it can still be an engaging watch—just not a bracing one.
