Thunderpants (2002)

Thunderpants is the kind of fearless kids’ comedy that takes one gloriously stupid idea and commits to it with real craft, turning bathroom humor into an oddly sweet, retro-feeling underdog fable with rockets on the horizon. Peter Hewitt stages the chaos with a storybook sense of momentum, and the presence of pros like Simon Callow, Stephen Fry, and Celia Imrie gives the whole thing a winking sincerity that keeps it from feeling cheap. The vibe is gleefully quirky and slightly anarchic, but beneath the noise it’s about a boy learning to own the thing that makes him different—and discovering it might be his ticket to somewhere bigger. It’s not for everyone (the crude jokes are constant, and the bullying/violence may rub some families the wrong way), but if you can meet it on its own silly terms, it’s a surprisingly well-made, laugh-heavy oddity you’ll remember.

Thunderpants is trying to be a goofy, kid-friendly underdog adventure that turns an embarrassing “problem” into a superpower, with a dash of sci‑fi wish fulfillment. The catch is that the entire engine runs on nonstop fart jokes, and if that premise doesn’t make you laugh in the first five minutes, the movie will feel like a long, loud endurance test.
