Spun (2003)

Spun is a caffeinated, three-day freefall into the meth underworld that’s shot and cut like a bad decision you can’t stop making—restless, funny in the darkest way, and weirdly hypnotic. Jonas Åkerlund turns sleaze and desperation into a kind of punk-rock choreography, with whip-smart editing that keeps the movie humming even when the characters are falling apart. Jason Schwartzman anchors the chaos with a jittery, human center, while Brittany Murphy brings bruised charisma and Mickey Rourke looms like a grimy myth in a motel-room kingdom. It’s not for the squeamish—sex, drugs, violence, and profanity are front and center—but if you can handle the grime, it’s an outrageously alive, wickedly entertaining ride that feels like a cult classic in the act of being born.

Spun is trying to be a grimy, darkly funny plunge into meth culture, shot with music-video energy and a parade of memorable weirdos. The problem is it’s so obsessed with frantic editing and shocky episodes that it can feel less like a story and more like being trapped in someone else’s bender—loud, chaotic, and oddly repetitive. If you need a clear plot, characters you can actually root for, or any breathing room from relentless sleaze and ugliness, this will test your patience fast. That said, the cast commits (Rourke and Murphy especially), and if you’re specifically in the mood for a stylized, uncomfortable, early-2000s drug-nightmare vibe, it delivers exactly that.
