Iris (2001)

Iris is special because it treats a great love story not as a fairy tale, but as a lived-in partnership—messy, funny, fiercely intelligent, and ultimately heartbreaking in the way real devotion can be. Richard Eyre’s direction keeps the film elegant and human-scaled, letting the romance breathe across time as Kate Winslet and Judi Dench capture Iris Murdoch’s spark in two distinct, seamlessly connected phases. Jim Broadbent, quietly extraordinary, makes John Bayley’s steadiness feel like its own kind of heroism, turning caregiving into something intimate rather than sentimental. It’s an emotionally intense watch and the R-rated sexuality and the Alzheimer’s material won’t be for everyone, but if you’re open to a mature, beautifully acted drama about love enduring when words and memory begin to fail, it’s deeply worth your time.

Iris is clearly aiming for an intimate, humane portrait of a great mind and a long marriage under the cruel pressure of Alzheimer’s, and when it focuses on the day-to-day devotion and loss, it can be quietly devastating. The problem is the film often plays things a bit too safely: the back-and-forth structure between young and older Iris can feel like a tidy “prestige” device rather than a genuinely revealing window into who Murdoch was. If you’re hoping for a deeper dive into her ideas, contradictions, and creative life, you may find it emotionally affecting but intellectually thin. Still, the performances—especially Dench and Broadbent—carry a lot of the weight, so it’s best suited to viewers who want a sober relationship drama and can handle explicit sexuality and heavy dementia-related distress.
