Amen. is special because it turns Holocaust history into a tense moral thriller about what happens when conscience collides with bureaucracy, and it does so with the clear-eyed urgency Costa-Gavras brings to his best work. Ulrich Tukur anchors the film with a performance that feels both controlled and quietly devastated, while Mathieu Kassovitz gives the story a restless, human pulse as faith and responsibility are put under unbearable pressure. The vibe is sober, intelligent, and relentlessly focused on the machinery of denial—boardrooms, corridors, careful language—where the most chilling choices are made without raising a voice. It isn’t an “easy watch,” and it’s not designed to comfort, but if you want a serious, bracing drama that asks what silence costs, this one stays with you.

Amen. is clearly trying to mount a moral indictment of institutional silence during the Holocaust, using Gerstein and a young Jesuit as conduits for outrage and conscience. The problem is that Costa-Gavras delivers it with a deliberate, sometimes plodding pace and a long runtime that can drain the story of the urgency you expect from this subject and from this director. It also leans toward blunt, message-forward dramatization rather than subtle character work, so if you’re allergic to heavy-handed political cinema, you’ll feel it. Still, the performances—especially Ulrich Tukur’s haunted intensity—give it weight, making it worth your time if you’re patient and looking for a sober, talky historical drama rather than a propulsive thriller.
