Dark Blue (2002)
Set during the Rodney King riots, a robbery homicide investigation triggers a series of events that will cause a corrupt LAPD officer to question his tactics.
What people think about Dark Blue
Dark Blue is the rare crime thriller that feels like it’s breathing the same hot, anxious air as its city, using the days leading up to the Rodney King verdict to give every glance and gunshot a moral aftershock. Kurt Russell delivers one of his most impassioned performances as a veteran cop whose swagger and shortcuts start to look less like confidence and more like corrosion, and the film lets you feel that shift without sermonizing. Ron Shelton keeps the investigation tight and engrossing, but it’s the eerie melancholia underneath—the sense of a system and a man coming unstitched—that makes it linger after the credits. It’s not for everyone, given the harsh violence, ugly language, and deliberately uncomfortable subject matter, but if you want a smart, adult drama wrapped in a hard-edged thriller, this one hits with real force.
Dark Blue wants to be a gritty, morally messy cop thriller that uses the Rodney King riots as a pressure cooker, and it does get real mileage out of Kurt Russell’s worn-down intensity. The problem is that the story often feels like reheated “dirty cop with a conscience” material, hitting familiar beats and occasionally leaning on plot turns that don’t feel fully earned. The riot backdrop adds heat, but it can also come off as more atmosphere than insight, which may leave you wanting something sharper or less formulaic. If you’re sensitive to harsh violence, aggressive language, and racial slurs, or you’re looking for a fresher take on LAPD corruption, this may not be your night—though fans of tough, old-school crime dramas will likely find it watchable.
