The Good Girl (2002)

What makes The Good Girl linger is how it turns a fluorescent-lit big-box store and a “normal” small-town marriage into a quietly thrilling pressure cooker, funny in the way real life can be funny when it hurts. Miguel Arteta’s film doesn’t romanticize adultery so much as dissect the hunger beneath it, and Jennifer Aniston is remarkably good—guarded, restless, and painfully human in a performance that finally lets you see the dramatic actor she always was. Jake Gyllenhaal brings a jittery, literary-boy intensity that’s equal parts charming and alarming, while the script keeps finding sharp little truths amid the awkwardness, bad choices, and yearning. It’s not a cozy rom-com and it doesn’t soften its adult edges, but if you like character-driven dramedies that are honest about desire and disappointment, this one is absolutely worth your time.
