Callas Forever (2002)

Callas Forever is special because it treats legend not as marble, but as a living, aching human being—an intimate backstage reverie about art, pride, and the stubborn desire to be heard again. Fanny Ardant doesn’t merely play Maria Callas; she inhabits her with a poised, mesmerizing intelligence, letting glamour and vulnerability share the same breath. Franco Zeffirelli wraps the story in sumptuous visuals and an affectionate, old-world elegance, then lets the Carmen sequences bloom with a musical electricity that feels like memory turning into flame. It’s a poignant, deliberately unhurried film—more a mood and a meditation than a conventional romance—so if you want big plot twists, look elsewhere, but if you want beauty, performance, and heartache in the same aria, it’s a lovely evening at the movies.

Callas Forever clearly wants to be a lush, bittersweet “what if” about Maria Callas reclaiming her voice and dignity, and there are moments where the mood, the music, and the idea of artistic reinvention genuinely land. The problem is the execution: the screenplay often feels clunky and the dialogue can be flat, which makes the drama slide into camp when it’s aiming for elegance. If you’re protective of Callas’s legacy or allergic to heavily fictionalized biopics, this may feel more like a risky fan-fiction detour than a respectful tribute, and the low-budget edges (including dubbing) don’t help. Watch it if you’re in it for the atmosphere and opera-adjacent fantasy; skip it if you want sharp writing, emotional realism, or a definitive portrait of Callas.
