Tanguy (2001)

Tanguy takes a simple, painfully recognizable premise—an adult child who won’t leave the nest—and turns it into a crisp, wickedly observant French comedy that keeps finding new ways to surprise you. Étienne Chatiliez stages the escalating household cold war with the elegance of farce and the bite of satire, letting every polite smile and “reasonable” conversation sharpen into something hilariously unhinged without ever tipping into cruelty for its own sake. Éric Berger’s serenely unmovable Tanguy plays beautifully against Sabine Azéma and André Dussollier as parents whose love curdles into desperation, creating a rhythm of wit and comic timing that feels both irresistible and a little too true. If you prefer broad, cuddly comedies you may find its edge a touch bracing, but if you enjoy smart humor about family, boundaries, and the absurdity of modern comfort, this one is a treat.

Tanguy is trying to be a sharp, slightly nasty French farce about parental desperation and a too-comfortable adult child, and it does land some laughs thanks to the committed, classy performances. The problem is it often pushes its joke to the point of repetition, and the parents’ escalating tactics can feel more mean-spirited than witty, which may leave you cringing instead of chuckling. If you like broad, uncomfortable family comedies where everyone behaves badly and the humor comes from humiliation and boundary-crossing, you’ll probably have a good time. If you want warmth, realism, or characters you can actually root for, this may feel like an exhausting one-note gag stretched to feature length.
