Jumping Ship (2001)
Michael has big plans to show his cousin Tommy a good time aboard a luxury yacht until he discovers that the yacht he's chartered is actually an old rusted fishing boat. But when modern-day pirates chase the fishing boat, the boys are forced to jump ship, leaving them stranded on a desert island with the boat's captain, Jake Hunter.
What people think about Jumping Ship
Jumping Ship is the kind of breezy, good-hearted adventure that remembers what “family movie” used to mean: big laughs, bright scenery, and just enough peril to make the triumphs feel earned without ever turning mean. The Lawrence brothers’ easy charisma does a lot of the heavy lifting, turning bickering cousins and an unlikely captain into a trio you genuinely enjoy spending time with, especially once the Australian-island vibe kicks in and the film leans into sun-soaked escapism. It’s light, clean, and comfortingly old-school—more about resourcefulness and loyalty than snark—so if you’re craving a warm Saturday-night watch with mild thrills and a lot of charm, it delivers. If you need razor-edged comedy or high-stakes intensity, this may feel too gentle, but for its target audience it’s an inviting little getaway.
Jumping Ship is clearly aiming for a breezy, family-friendly adventure-comedy where the stakes feel exciting but safe, with the Lawrence brothers’ easygoing charm doing most of the heavy lifting. The problem is that the “pirates and desert island” setup is far more Saturday-afternoon tame than genuinely suspenseful, and the story hits its beats so predictably you can see the next turn coming from miles away. If you’re expecting real danger, clever twists, or action that escalates, this will likely feel lightweight and a bit disposable. But if you want clean, low-stress fun with mild peril, a few chuckles, and a simple “grow up and take responsibility” message, it does the job without offending anyone’s sensibilities.
