Kiss of the Dragon (2001)

Kiss of the Dragon is the kind of action thriller that earns its adrenaline honestly: Jet Li doesn’t so much perform fight scenes as carve them into the frame with speed, precision, and a bruising sense of reality that CGI can’t fake. Set in a slick, shadowy Paris of backroom deals and corrupt authority, it moves with brisk, street-level urgency—more pressure cooker than popcorn, with every chase and brawl feeling like it has consequences. Bridget Fonda brings a grounded, human counterweight to the mayhem, and the film’s stylish energy keeps the story lean even when the violence gets intense. Kiss of the Dragon is trying to be a lean, gritty “wrong man” thriller in a hostile Paris, built around Jet Li as a disciplined outsider who has to survive corruption, betrayal, and a ticking-clock rescue. When it sticks to action, it delivers: the fights are sharp, fast, and satisfyingly physical, with Li’s precision doing most of the talking. The problem is everything between punches—thin dialogue, cardboard characters, and a very familiar plot that asks you to swallow some pretty convenient turns without much emotional groundwork.
