Adaptation. (2002)
Charlie Kaufman is a confused L.A. screenwriter overwhelmed by feelings of inadequacy, sexual frustration, self-loathing, and by the screenwriting ambitions of his freeloading twin brother Donald. While struggling to adapt "The Orchid Thief," by Susan Orlean, Kaufman's life spins from pathetic to bizarre. The lives of Kaufman and Orlean's book become strangely intertwined as each one's search for passion collides with the other's.
What people think about Adaptation.
Adaptation. is the rare movie that turns the act of trying to make art into an art form itself—witty, anxious, and unexpectedly thrilling, like a comedy that keeps discovering new rooms inside its own head. Spike Jonze stages Charlie Kaufman’s creative paralysis with bracing honesty and a mischievous sense of play, while Nicolas Cage delivers a dual performance so sharply observed it feels like watching one soul argue with itself in real time. Meryl Streep and Chris Cooper add a seductive, off-kilter gravity, drawing you into a world where obsession can be funny, haunting, and oddly beautiful without the film ever explaining itself away. It’s not for viewers who want a straightforward crime-drama or a tidy three-act ride, but if you enjoy inventive storytelling that’s both hilarious and uncomfortably human, this one sticks like a brilliant thought you can’t shake.
Adaptation. is trying to turn the agony of creativity into a clever, meta comedy-drama, and Spike Jonze commits hard to that weird, brainy premise. When it works, it’s sharply acted (Cage is genuinely impressive in the dual role, and Streep/Cooper bring real texture) and often funny in a painfully honest way about insecurity and obsession. But if you hate movies that wink at themselves, feel like they’re showing off, or pivot into a more “movie-ish” finish that some people find forced, this can start to feel smug rather than smart. It’s best for viewers who enjoy self-referential storytelling and don’t need a tidy, emotionally straightforward payoff to feel satisfied.
