Life as a House (2001)
When a man is diagnosed with terminal cancer, he takes custody of his misanthropic teenage son, for whom quality time means getting high, engaging in small-time prostitution, and avoiding his father.
What people think about Life as a House
Life as a House is one of those intimate dramas that sneaks up on you: it takes a seemingly simple summer project and turns it into a soulful act of repair, where building a home becomes a way of rebuilding a family. Kevin Kline gives a raw, unvarnished performance that feels lived-in rather than performed, and the film wisely lets Hayden Christensen’s guarded teenage anger soften in believable, hard-won increments, with Kristin Scott Thomas bringing aching intelligence to every glance and pause. The tone is tender but not sentimental, carrying a bruised, coastal quiet that makes the emotional moments land without being pushed. It’s not for everyone—there’s frank sexuality, drugs, and some genuinely uncomfortable material—but if you can meet it where it is, you’ll find a deeply human movie about what we try to fix when time is running out.
Life as a House is aiming for a heartfelt, end-of-life reconciliation story, using the literal act of building a home as a big, obvious metaphor for rebuilding a broken family. The problem is it often pushes so hard for tears that it can feel engineered rather than earned, piling on crises and “meaningful” moments until the emotions start to register as manipulation. It also mixes very heavy teen material (sex, drugs, and some disturbing sexual content) into a glossy melodrama, which may strike you as sensational rather than truthful. Still, Kevin Kline brings real warmth and weariness, and Hayden Christensen is better than his reputation here—just don’t go in expecting subtlety or restraint.
