Joseph: King of Dreams (2000)
In this animated retelling of the story from the Bible's Book of Genesis, Joseph's gift of dream interpretation and his brilliantly colored coat inspires jealousy in his brothers.
What people think about Joseph: King of Dreams
Joseph: King of Dreams is one of those rare direct-to-video gems that earns your attention with sincerity, visual imagination, and a surprisingly grown-up emotional pulse. It tells a familiar biblical story with the sweep of an old-fashioned musical—lush songs, big feelings, and Van Gogh-inspired dream sequences that feel genuinely artful rather than merely “kid-friendly.” Ben Affleck gives Joseph an earnest warmth, Mark Hamill brings bite and humanity to the brothers’ conflict, and the film’s standout ballad, “You Know Better Than I,” lands with the kind of quiet ache that sticks around after the credits. It’s unabashedly spiritual and melodramatic at times, so it won’t be for viewers allergic to faith-forward storytelling, but if you want an animated drama about pride, forgiveness, and second chances that treats its audience with dignity, it’s easy to recommend.
Joseph: King of Dreams is clearly aiming to be a heartfelt, kid-friendly musical retelling of a Bible story about faith, forgiveness, and growing up, and it mostly succeeds at being gentle and sincere. The problem is it lives in the shadow of The Prince of Egypt, and once you notice the smaller scale, simpler animation, and songs that don’t really stick, it can feel more like a well-meaning companion piece than an event. The pacing is brisk to the point of feeling compressed, so some big emotional turns land more “explained” than truly earned. If you want a polished, epic musical or you’re picky about animation quality, this may disappoint; if you’re looking for a safe family watch with a positive message and a few solid voice performances, it can still do the job.
