Serving Sara (2002)

Serving Sara is the kind of breezy, slightly naughty road-comedy that knows exactly what it wants to be: a glossy chase movie powered by charm, bad decisions, and the delicious idea that paperwork can ignite mayhem. Matthew Perry brings his familiar, self-deprecating snap as a put-upon process server, while Elizabeth Hurley glides through the chaos with a saucy confidence that gives the film its main pulse of swagger. Reginald Hudlin keeps things moving with a postcard-cross-country vibe—oddball detours, escalating rivals, and just enough romantic spark to make the bickering feel like foreplay. It’s not for viewers craving subtlety or sophistication (the humor can be broad and the PG-13 edge is real), but if you’re in the mood for undemanding, high-energy entertainment with two leads who look like they’re having fun, it’s an easy yes.

Serving Sara is clearly aiming for a breezy, cross-country screwball rom-com where a cynical process server and a crafty socialite bicker their way into romance. The problem is the comedy leans hard on recycled gags and crude “look how outrageous this is” moments, and the supposed spark between Matthew Perry and Elizabeth Hurley often feels more like two people stuck in the same scene than a couple you’re rooting for. If you’re allergic to early-2000s vulgar humor, cartoonish violence, and Perry’s familiar exasperated shtick doing most of the heavy lifting, this will likely feel flat and disposable. The small upside is that Hurley commits to the glamorous chaos and the premise has enough momentum to keep it moving, even when the jokes don’t land.
