Ghost Rider (2007)

Ghost Rider is the kind of comic-book movie that commits to its own fever-dream mythology: hellfire on asphalt, a flaming skull cutting through the night, and Nicolas Cage playing a cursed daredevil with just enough sincerity and wild-eyed intensity to make the madness feel strangely personal. Mark Steven Johnson leans into pulpy, supernatural spectacle, delivering a dark-fantasy vibe that’s more grindhouse fairytale than sleek superhero chic, with action beats built around chains, engines, and infernal transformation. It’s not the sharpest script in the genre, and if you need grounded realism or witty polish you may bounce off it, but if you’re in the mood for bold imagery, big effects, and a hero who looks like he rode straight out of a heavy-metal album cover, this one is an easy ticket to take.

Ghost Rider wants to be a pulpy, heavy-metal comic-book morality tale about a man stuck with a devil’s bargain, and the basic concept is still terrific: flaming skull, cursed hero, supernatural payback. The problem is the movie plays it surprisingly safe, with formulaic plotting, clunky dialogue, and action beats that often feel more noisy than thrilling, so the “infernal” promise rarely lands with real weight. Nicolas Cage commits (sometimes in a way that’s more oddball than cool), and Sam Elliott brings a bit of gravitas, but the tone wobbles between spooky, silly, and flat without ever fully clicking. If you can enjoy mid-2000s superhero cheese and want some gothic visuals with PG-13 horror flair, you may have fun; if you’re hoping for sharp writing, strong chemistry, or consistently exciting action, this will likely waste your time.
