The Animal (2001)
When loser Marvin Mange is involved in a horrible car accident, he's brought back to life by a deranged scientist as half man and half animal. His newfound powers are awesome -- but their adverse side effects could take over his life. Now, Marvin must fight to control his crazy primal urges around his new squeeze, Rianna, and his rival, Sgt. Sisk, who both think he's one cool cat.
What people think about The Animal
What makes The Animal oddly irresistible is how it commits—completely and unapologetically—to being a big, goofy, sci-fi-flavored comedy where the punchlines come with claws, fangs, and a surprising amount of physical mayhem. Rob Schneider leans into the underdog-to-weird-hero energy with shameless enthusiasm, while John C. McGinley’s hard-edged presence gives the madness something solid to bounce off of. The vibe is pure early-2000s “turn your brain off and laugh” silliness, packed with primal gags and cartoonish escalation rather than clever satire. It’s not for viewers hunting nuance or subtlety, but if you’re in the mood for mindless fun that knows exactly what it is, this one delivers the laughs.
The Animal is trying to be a goofy sci‑fi body comedy where Rob Schneider’s underdog cop gets bizarre “superpowers” and spirals into chaotic, animalistic antics. The problem is that most of the laughs lean heavily on crude, low-effort gross-out gags and one-note behavior jokes, so if that style doesn’t hit for you, the movie can feel repetitive and surprisingly dull. The premise is thin and the story mostly exists to string sketches together, which makes it hard to care about the romance or the rivalry beyond the next bit. If you enjoy early‑2000s “stupid on purpose” comedies, you might get a few chuckles (and John C. McGinley brings some energy), but if you’re looking for clever sci‑fi comedy or sharp writing, this probably isn’t your time well spent.
