Snow White (2001) earns its keep by treating the familiar fairy tale like a story told by firelight: lush, eerie, and just grown-up enough to feel newly alive. Caroline Thompson leans into a darker, storybook-gothic atmosphere where the production design, costumes, and elaborate makeup don’t merely decorate the frame—they create a world you can almost touch, rich with menace and wonder. At the center, Miranda Richardson’s Queen Elspeth is a deliciously unsettling force, giving the film its sharpest edge without tipping into camp. It’s not the cuddly version for very young kids, but if you want a visually distinctive, satisfyingly sinister take that still plays like a classic, this one is easy to recommend.
