Kurukshetra (2000)

Kurukshetra has the crackle of a classic Mumbai crime drama that actually means what it says about justice: it’s blunt, urgent, and powered by a moral fury that doesn’t let up. Mahesh Manjrekar stages the story like a street-level war between an honest cop and a system designed to break him, and Sanjay Dutt carries it with a bruised charisma that makes every confrontation feel personal, not procedural. The dialogue lands with the satisfying thud of conviction, while the supporting cast—especially Om Puri—adds weight and credibility to the film’s larger political menace. It’s not a subtle movie and it deals with grim subject matter, but if you want an intense, massy battle of courage versus corruption with real dramatic bite, this one delivers.

Kurukshetra is aiming for a righteous, no-nonsense “one honest cop versus a rotten system” crusader drama, and it clearly wants you to leave feeling that justice can still bite back. The problem is it leans hard on familiar Bollywood cop-movie beats, with a lot of talky, drawn-out stretches and a second half that can feel like it’s circling the same point until the next burst of brutality. The violence is frequent and harsh enough that, if you’re not in the mood for grim, punishing material, this will feel more exhausting than thrilling. Still, if you mainly want Sanjay Dutt in stern, take-no-prisoners mode and don’t mind a predictable, heavy-handed ride, it delivers that straightforward catharsis.
