Amores Perros (2000)

Amores Perros is the kind of debut that announces a filmmaker with nerve and compassion, stitching three lives together with the force of a punch and the ache of a confession. Iñárritu shoots Mexico City like a living organism—loud, hungry, and heartbreakingly intimate—so that every choice feels charged, every coincidence like fate with teeth. The film moves with thriller urgency but lands like a drama, carried by raw performances (especially Gael García Bernal and Emilio Echevarría) that make even desperate people feel fully human. Fair warning: it’s bruising, with disturbing violence and dogfighting that can be hard to watch, but if you can handle its intensity, it’s an unforgettable, morally electric ride.

Amores Perros is trying to be a raw, interconnected portrait of Mexico City where one violent moment ripples through three lives, and it largely succeeds at feeling urgent and alive. The catch is that Iñárritu doesn’t just “suggest” darkness—he rubs your face in it, with relentless brutality (including dogfighting) and a grim, fatalistic tone that offers very little comfort. If you’re sensitive to animal harm, intense violence, or you simply don’t enjoy movies that punish their characters for two-plus hours, this will feel like endurance cinema, not entertainment.
