Someone Like You... (2001)
Jane Goodale has everything going for her. She's a producer on a popular daytime talk show, and is in a hot romance with the show's dashing executive producer Ray. But when the relationship goes terribly awry, Jane begins an extensive study of the male animal, including her womanizing roommate Eddie. Jane puts her studies and romantic misadventure to use as a pseudonymous sex columnist -- and becomes a sensation.
What people think about Someone Like You...
Someone Like You… is the kind of smart, breezy rom-com that wins you over with sheer charm: it’s funny without being mean, romantic without being syrupy, and anchored by a heroine who feels like a real person licking her wounds and laughing at herself anyway. Ashley Judd gives Jane an appealing mix of competence and vulnerability, while Hugh Jackman brings a surprising warmth and comic ease that makes their push-pull chemistry genuinely enjoyable to watch. Set against the bright bustle of daytime TV and the small humiliations of modern dating, the movie has a light, talky vibe with just enough heart sneaking in around the jokes. It’s not for anyone craving edgy cynicism or big dramatic twists, but if you want a comforting, grown-up crowd-pleaser with likable leads and a few unexpectedly tender moments, this is an easy yes.
Someone Like You... wants to be a glossy, post-breakup romantic comedy about a smart woman turning heartache into a cheeky “men are animals” theory, and it does have an easy, breezy studio vibe. The problem is it’s so formulaic and predictable that you can feel the plot points lining up long before the characters get there, and the big ideas about dating never get much deeper than cute magazine-column banter. Ashley Judd is likable and Hugh Jackman brings charm, but the movie leans on sitcom-level misunderstandings and a generic rom-com engine rather than genuine surprises or emotional bite. If you’re looking for sharp writing or a fresh take on modern relationships, this will probably feel thin—but if you just want a comfortable early-2000s rom-com with attractive leads and low stakes, it’ll do the job.
