Valentine (2001)
Four friends start to receive morbid Valentine cards and realise they are being stalked by someone they had spurned 13 years ago. A masked killer is on the loose and Valentine's day is soon approaching.
What people think about Valentine
Valentine is the kind of early-2000s slasher that understands presentation is half the scare: glossy, shadowy, and just mean enough to keep you checking the corners of the frame. Jamie Blanks stages the mayhem with a slick, high-contrast style and a steady drip of dread, turning familiar settings—apartments, hallways, parties—into places you don’t want to be alone in. The Cupid mask is a deliciously twisted hook, and the film leans into suspense and atmosphere as much as it does bloodletting, building a pulpy revenge vibe that feels tailor-made for a late-night watch. It’s not for anyone allergic to R-rated violence or the era’s soapy melodrama, but if you want a fun, nasty Valentine’s date with a crowd-pleasing body-count rhythm, this delivers.
Valentine is clearly aiming for glossy, early-2000s slasher fun: a masked killer, a revenge hook, and a parade of set-piece murders leading up to a holiday deadline. The problem is it plays almost entirely by the numbers, with thinly written characters and a mystery that feels more like box-ticking than tension-building, so the suspense rarely lands. If you need clever twists, genuinely scary atmosphere, or a finale that feels earned, this will likely leave you cold. That said, if you’re in the mood for a slick, mean-spirited throwback with some nasty kills and a familiar whodunit vibe, it can work as undemanding background horror.
