Slackers (2002)

Slackers is the kind of early-2000s campus comedy that wins you over on sheer mischievous momentum: it’s loud, quick, and just subversive enough to feel like it’s winking at the whole “college legend” myth while still indulging it. Dewey Nicks keeps the vibe buzzy and offbeat, letting the dialogue snap and the escalating one-upmanship play like a cartoon chess match between charming frauds and the most aggressively awkward hall monitor imaginable. The cast leans into the silliness with real commitment, with plenty of inspired oddball beats that give the movie its spunky personality rather than making it feel like a generic raunch-fest. It is definitely R-rated and proudly lowbrow at times, so if you’re allergic to crude jokes you may want to pass, but if you want a high-energy, mean-spirited-in-a-funny-way comedy with a surprisingly sweet romantic undercurrent, it’s an easy watch.

Slackers is aiming for a raunchy, early-2000s campus romp where smug cheaters get their comeuppance and a messy love triangle adds a bit of romance. The problem is it mistakes volume for comedy: the gross-out gags and “look how awful we can be” energy can feel more obnoxious than funny, and most of the characters are written to grate rather than charm. If you need likable leads, clever satire, or anything resembling believable romance, this will probably feel like a dirty, cheesy slog. The small upside is that the cast has occasional spark (especially a young Jason Segel), and if you’re specifically nostalgic for trashy R-rated college comedies, you might tolerate it as a time capsule.
