Cats & Dogs is the kind of high-concept family movie that commits so fully to its own absurdity that you can’t help but admire it: a slick, tongue-in-cheek spy thriller where the agents just happen to have fur and a chew toy. Lawrence Guterman stages the mayhem with real energy, mixing gadgetry, covert missions, and rapid-fire sight gags into a breezy adventure that plays like a kid-friendly riff on espionage movies, with surprisingly impressive effects for its era. Jeff Goldblum’s anxious-scientist presence grounds the human side just enough while the real fun comes from the film’s deadpan seriousness about an utterly ridiculous secret war. It’s not for everyone—if talking-animal antics or broad comedy make you roll your eyes, you’ll resist it—but if you’re on the fence and want something light, inventive, and cheerfully over-the-top, this is an easy, nostalgic crowd-pleaser.

Cats & Dogs is clearly aiming for a kid-friendly, live-action cartoon: a spy-movie parody where pets run a secret war under humanity’s nose, powered by big effects and nonstop slapstick. The problem is it rarely lets the premise breathe—pacing is frantic, the writing leans loud over clever, and the characters are mostly thin sketches you’re asked to root for because the movie says so. If you’re hoping for sharp humor or a story with real stakes and heart, this can feel noisy, predictable, and a bit irritating. But if you just want a brisk, silly family distraction with surprisingly solid animal effects and a straightforward good-dogs-vs-bad-cats setup, it does that job well enough.
