Devdas (2002)

Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, and Madhuri Dixit give the tragedy a human pulse, so even at its most grandly theatrical, it still lands with the sting of real longing. Devdas is trying to be a grand, operatic tragedy about love, pride, and self-destruction, staged like a lavish fever dream where every emotion is turned up to maximum volume. If you don’t have patience for heavy melodrama, slow-burn misery, and characters making frustratingly passive choices, this can feel emotionally exhausting rather than moving. Bhansali’s visual splendor and the star power (especially the performances and the iconic musical set-pieces) are genuinely impressive, but the storytelling can feel like it’s drowning in its own ornamentation. Watch it if you want sweeping romance and spectacle with tragic inevitability; skip it if you prefer subtlety, tighter pacing, or drama that earns its tears instead of insisting on them.
