Flickering Lights (2000)

Flickering Lights is the kind of crime comedy that sneaks up on you: it starts with a clever, adrenaline-fueled double-cross and gradually reveals a surprisingly tender heart beating under all that bravado. Anders Thomas Jensen directs with a confident, propulsive rhythm, balancing crisp action and wickedly dry humor with an offbeat warmth as these four not-so-bright gangsters discover the strange comfort of hiding out in the middle of nowhere. The film’s pleasure is in its tonal tightrope walk—brutal, funny, and oddly life-affirming—anchored by terrific performances, including a young Mads Mikkelsen radiating quiet intensity. Fair warning: it’s frequently violent and aggressively profane, so it’s not for the squeamish, but if you can handle its dark edges, it’s a wildly entertaining ride with more soul than you’d ever expect.

Flickering Lights is clearly trying to mash up a violent gangster-on-the-run story with a warm, oddball “found family” redemption arc, and when it clicks you can see why people love its offbeat Danish humor and the cast’s deadpan charm. The problem is the tone can feel like it’s yanking you around: one minute it’s cozy and sentimental, the next it’s brutally grim, and not everyone buys that combo. It also takes its time getting where it’s going, and the plotting can feel a bit obvious, so if you need tight pacing or subtle writing, you may start checking the clock. Add in very strong profanity, heavy drinking/drugs, and frequent dark-comic violence, and this is one to skip if you’re looking for a light crime comedy rather than a rough-edged, mood-swerving one.
