Val Kilmer anchors the madness with a committed, haunted performance that gives the story real emotional weight beneath the sleaze and snap. It’s violent, profane, and intentionally disorienting at times, so it won’t be for everyone—but if you like crime thrillers that swing for something stranger and more original than the usual procedurals, this one hits with a nasty, unforgettable punch.

The Salton Sea is trying to be a grimy, noir-ish plunge into addiction, grief, and revenge, dressed up with a twisty mystery and a constant sense that everyone’s lying. The problem is it often feels more in love with its own slick, “edgy” vibe than with real emotional weight, so the characters can come off as cool poses rather than people you actually care about. It’s also relentlessly drug-soaked and violent, which might feel punishing if you’re not in the mood for bleakness and nastiness as atmosphere. Still, if you can tolerate the derivative Tarantino-adjacent swagger, Val Kilmer commits hard and a few supporting turns (especially Vincent D’Onofrio) give it enough strange energy to keep some viewers hooked.
