Ring 0 (2000)
Taking place thirty years before the events of Ringu, Ringu 0 provides the shocking background story of how the girl on the video became a deadly, vengeful spirit.
What people think about Ring 0
Ring 0 is the rare horror prequel that earns its existence by leaning into tragedy as much as terror, turning the legend of Sadako into a haunting character study rather than just another string of shocks. Norio Tsuruta builds a slow, stage-lit dread around the world of a theater troupe, where jealousy, obsession, and whispered supernatural incidents creep in like a draft under a locked door. Yukie Nakama gives Sadako a wounded humanity that makes the film’s scares land harder, because you’re not only frightened of what’s happening—you’re also moved by what’s being lost. It’s more somber and emotionally driven than some entries in the franchise, so if you want nonstop jolts you may find it deliberate, but if you like horror that lingers in the heart as well as the nerves, this one is worth the descent.
Ring 0 is clearly trying to humanize Sadako and turn the franchise’s cold, minimalist dread into a tragic origin story, mixing backstage drama with supernatural horror. The problem is it often feels like the movie is explaining the mystery to death, piling on coincidences and melodramatic twists that blunt the eerie simplicity that made the earlier films so effective. If you’re here for the slow, creeping “less is more” terror of Ringu, this prequel may feel talky, over-plotted, and oddly conventional for a series that once thrived on restraint. Still, Yukie Nakama gives Sadako a sympathetic edge and a few set-pieces land with real unease, so it can work if you want lore, tragedy, and mood over pure chills.
