Collateral Damage (2002)
Firefighter Gordon Brewer is plunged into the complex and dangerous world of international terrorism after he loses his wife and child in a bombing credited to Claudio 'The Wolf' Perrini.
What people think about Collateral Damage
Collateral Damage works best when you stop expecting quips and start watching Arnold Schwarzenegger play a man whose grief has turned into a blunt, dangerous kind of determination. Director Andrew Davis stages the action with a craftsman’s confidence—clean geography, real tension, and a grounded, sweaty vibe that leans more into thriller urgency than cartoon spectacle. The film’s strongest pull is its surprisingly committed performances, giving the revenge premise a harder edge and a bit more human weight than the title suggests. It’s not for viewers who want a light, escapist ride—this one is angry and rough around the edges—but if you’re in the mood for a solid, competently made early-2000s action drama with teeth, it delivers.
Collateral Damage is clearly trying to be a gritty, emotionally driven revenge thriller where an ordinary working guy is pushed past his limits and takes on something far bigger than himself. The problem is it plays like a checklist of early-2000s action beats—predictable turns, clunky coincidences, and a “just go with it” plot that asks you to swallow a lot of nonsense to keep moving. In a post-9/11 world, its take on terrorism can feel especially blunt and awkward rather than thoughtful, which makes the drama land with less impact than it wants. If you’re mainly here for Arnold doing determined, no-frills hero work and can tolerate B-movie logic, it’s watchable; if you want smart suspense, believable stakes, or anything remotely surprising, you’ll probably feel your time being wasted.
