The Others (2001)

Alejandro Amenábar builds suspense with the patience of a master craftsman, letting creaking floors, half-heard sounds, and the strict rituals of a shuttered mansion do the heavy lifting until you’re leaning forward, listening. At the center, Nicole Kidman gives a fierce, tightly wound performance that makes every protective instinct and flicker of doubt feel painfully real, while the supporting cast adds a hush of unease that never breaks. If you want loud shocks and constant action, this may feel too restrained, but if you crave a smart, atmospheric thriller that earns its chills, it’s a beautifully unsettling ride.

The Others is aiming for an old-school, gothic ghost story where dread comes from atmosphere, grief, and creeping uncertainty rather than jump scares, and it mostly commits to that mood with impressive discipline. The trade-off is a very deliberate pace and a script that can feel like it’s stalling in places, so if you want constant momentum or clear, clean plotting, you may find yourself getting impatient or slightly lost as it goes on. It’s more about tension, silence, and suspicion than outright horror spectacle, which means some viewers will call it classy and others will call it slow. Still, Nicole Kidman is excellent, the house is genuinely eerie, and if you like restrained, candlelit mystery-horror, this is a solid fit.
