Ghosts of Mars (2001)

Ghosts of Mars is the kind of gloriously scrappy sci-fi ride that knows exactly what it is: a loud, lean, B-movie blast where the action hits hard and the attitude never apologizes. John Carpenter stages the mayhem with a pulpy confidence, turning dusty Martian corridors into a pressure-cooker of siege thrills, eerie horror vibes, and propulsive shootouts that keep you grinning even when it gets wonderfully over-the-top. It’s less interested in deep mythology than in delivering a fun, campy good time with a crunchy early-2000s edge and a “turn it up” soundtrack energy. If you’re looking for serious, prestige science fiction, this isn’t it—but if you want an entertaining, unapologetic genre mash-up that plays like a midnight movie on a big screen, it’s easy to recommend.

Ghosts of Mars is clearly trying to mash up John Carpenter’s siege-style action with sci-fi horror and a trashy B-movie attitude, and on paper that’s a fun pitch. The problem is the execution: the dialogue is clunky, the performances often feel stiff, and the story keeps tripping over its own flashback-heavy structure until the tension leaks out. If you need smart plotting, believable characters, or anything resembling subtlety, this will likely feel cheesy and oddly forgettable. But if you can enjoy a loud, grimy, early-2000s action-horror romp on pure vibe—neon grit, simple shootouts, and Carpenter’s style peeking through—you might still get some guilty-pleasure mileage.
