Made (2001)

Made is one of those scrappy, street-level crime comedies that feels special because it runs almost entirely on rhythm: the lived-in friendship between Jon Favreau’s tightly wound straight man and Vince Vaughn’s gloriously unstoppable motor-mouth, whose every sentence threatens to turn a simple errand into a five-alarm disaster. Favreau directs with an unshowy confidence, letting the scenes breathe so the banter can land and the social discomfort can build into laughs that feel earned rather than forced. The vibe is wiseguy-adjacent without being a parody—more hangout comedy with real stakes, where the criminal world is just plausible enough to keep you leaning forward. It is very R-rated and not for anyone allergic to constant profanity or lowlife antics, but if you like character-driven humor and two actors sparring like they’ve known each other forever, this one’s a surprisingly addictive good time.

Made is clearly trying to recapture the loose, talky charm of Swingers, mixing low-level crime stakes with two buddies riffing their way into trouble. The problem is it often feels like a series of meandering conversations and repeated beats rather than a story that builds, and Vince Vaughn’s intentionally abrasive loudmouth can slide from funny to exhausting depending on your tolerance for nonstop bravado. If you want a tight crime-comedy with sharp plotting, this may feel slight and ad hoc, with the R-rated profanity and drugs doing more heavy lifting than the actual tension. That said, Favreau and Vaughn have real chemistry, and if you enjoy hangout movies where the point is the banter (even when it’s grating), there’s enough swagger and oddball energy to make it an easy watch.
