Dead or Alive (1999)
Ryūichi and his small gang of Triad vie for control of the Japanese underworld in a crime-ridden Shinjuku quarter while Detective Jojima tries to bring it down.
What people think about Dead or Alive
Dead or Alive is the kind of crime thriller that feels plugged into a live wire: Takashi Miike turns Shinjuku’s underworld into a feverish, neon-lit pressure cooker where every scene crackles with swagger, speed, and a sense that anything can happen. It moves with quick-cut bravado and a punk-rock pulse, balancing cops-and-gangsters grit with an audacious, boundary-pushing style that’s as cinematic as it is confrontational. Riki Takeuchi and Shô Aikawa bring a hard-edged intensity that makes the rivalry feel mythic even when it’s rooted in street-level desperation. Fair warning: this is a nasty, blood-soaked ride with genuinely disturbing moments, but if you can handle Miike’s shock tactics, you’ll get a singular, high-voltage thriller that doesn’t play by anyone else’s rules.
Dead or Alive is Takashi Miike trying to mash a straight-faced cops-and-gangsters thriller into a punk, anything-goes fever dream about Shinjuku’s underworld. When it’s locked into its gritty crime mode, it has real momentum and a couple of enjoyably intense performances, especially if you like your noir dirty and mean. The problem is it keeps swerving into shock-for-shock’s-sake brutality and wild tonal left turns that can make the story feel less like a descent and more like a dare to keep watching. If you want a coherent, emotionally grounded crime saga, this will likely feel hollow and pointless; if you’re here for Miike’s maximalist, reality-breaking provocation and can stomach extreme violence and cruelty, you’ll at least get exactly that.
