Chopper (2000)

Chopper is the rare crime film that feels like a tall tale told straight-faced, where the brutality is real but the storytelling has a sly, unnerving wit that keeps you leaning in. Andrew Dominik directs with a cool, confident eye, finding an odd, almost poetic beauty in ugly places without ever pretending the violence is heroic. At the center is Eric Bana’s ferociously charismatic performance, funny one minute and frightening the next, turning Mark “Chopper” Read into a figure you can’t quite understand yet can’t stop watching. It’s compelling and surprisingly intelligent about the myths criminals build around themselves, though if you’re looking for a comforting moral compass or an easy hang, this one’s jagged edges are the point.

Chopper is trying to be a brutally funny, unsettling character study of Mark “Chopper” Read, using dark humor and sudden violence to show how charisma and cruelty can live in the same body. It largely succeeds on the strength of Eric Bana’s fearless performance, but don’t expect a polished crime thriller with a clean arc or anyone to root for—this is more a series of grim, jagged episodes than a satisfying rise-and-fall story. The violence is blunt and the tone is deliberately abrasive, sometimes daring you to laugh and then punishing you for it, which can feel more exhausting than insightful if you’re not on its wavelength. If you want moral clarity, emotional warmth, or even basic likability, this probably isn’t for you; if you can handle discomfort and are curious about a raw, actor-driven descent into menace, it’s worth a look.
