Blow (2001)

Blow is the kind of true-crime saga that feels like a fast, seductive rush—and then lingers like a hangover you can’t shake, tracing the American dream’s dark underside with swagger and sorrow in equal measure. Johnny Depp makes George Jung more than a headline; he’s charismatic, funny, and quietly heartbreaking as the film glides through sunlit highs and inevitable, tightening consequences. Ted Demme keeps the pace lively and the vibe stylish without letting you forget the human cost, and Penélope Cruz adds a volatile spark that turns glamour into danger. It’s not for anyone who wants a moral lecture or is uneasy with pervasive drug content, but if you can handle an R-rated plunge into ambition, bad decisions, and the price of wanting more, it’s compulsively watchable.

Blow wants to be a glossy rise-and-fall cautionary tale about chasing money and status, and it’s clearly aiming for that Scorsese-style momentum without actually having Scorsese’s bite. The problem is it often feels scattered and emotionally prepackaged, rushing through big life turns and leaning into sentiment that can soften the uglier realities of what the story is about. Johnny Depp is watchable and the period vibe is slick, but the film can come off as more like a highlight reel of crimes and consequences than a truly sharp character study. If you’re sensitive to drug-heavy material or you want a crime drama that interrogates its antihero instead of occasionally glamorizing him, this may leave you cold.
