Peter Mullan gives a bruisingly human performance at the center, while Milla Jovovich brings a smoky, lived-in allure that keeps the film from turning into a mere parable. It’s deliberate, adult, and sometimes harsh in its sexuality and violence, so it won’t suit viewers craving a brisk, heroic Western—but if you want a romantic drama with real weight and atmosphere you can almost breathe in, it’s quietly mesmerizing.

The Claim is aiming for a bleak, literary Western romance about guilt, capitalism, and the price of a single unforgivable choice, with Winterbottom treating the story like a slow snowfall you can’t stop. The problem is it can feel emotionally sealed-off: the pacing is deliberate to the point of sleepy, and the characters’ pain is often observed at arm’s length rather than felt, which makes the tragedy land colder than it probably intends.
