Ready to Rumble (2000)

Ready to Rumble is a time capsule of turn-of-the-millennium wrestling culture that plays like a love letter written in permanent marker: loud, shameless, and oddly sincere about what it means to believe in a hero. David Arquette and Scott Caan lean into the slacker-fan devotion with a sweetness that keeps the crude jokes from feeling mean-spirited, while the wrestling set pieces have a snap and rhythm that shows real respect for the spectacle. The movie’s real secret weapon is its parade of WCW cameos and in-ring personalities, which give it the giddy energy of a backstage pass even when the story is being gloriously ridiculous. If you’re allergic to PG-13 raunch and broad comedy, it may be too much body-slam buffoonery, but if you want an easy, rowdy crowd-pleaser that knows exactly what it is, this one earns its cheers.
