Ready to Rumble (2000)
Two slacker wrestling fans are devastated by the ousting of their favorite character by an unscrupulous promoter.
What people think about Ready to Rumble
Ready to Rumble is a time capsule of turn-of-the-millennium wrestling culture that plays like a love letter written in permanent marker: loud, shameless, and oddly sincere about what it means to believe in a hero. David Arquette and Scott Caan lean into the slacker-fan devotion with a sweetness that keeps the crude jokes from feeling mean-spirited, while the wrestling set pieces have a snap and rhythm that shows real respect for the spectacle. The movie’s real secret weapon is its parade of WCW cameos and in-ring personalities, which give it the giddy energy of a backstage pass even when the story is being gloriously ridiculous. If you’re allergic to PG-13 raunch and broad comedy, it may be too much body-slam buffoonery, but if you want an easy, rowdy crowd-pleaser that knows exactly what it is, this one earns its cheers.
Ready to Rumble is trying to be a loud, goofy love letter to pro wrestling fandom, with underdogs dragging their fallen hero back to the ring for one last shot. The problem is the comedy leans hard on crude, juvenile bits and broad caricatures, and if that doesn’t hit for you, the thin plot and noisy pacing make the whole thing feel longer than it is. Performances are game but rarely sharp, and the writing often mistakes “obnoxious” for “funny,” which is where a lot of viewers tap out. That said, if you have nostalgia for WCW cameos and you’re in the mood for a dumb, rowdy wrestling-adjacent hangout movie, it can still deliver a few easy crowd-pleaser moments.
