What people think about Running Out of Time
Running Out of Time is what happens when a crime thriller decides it wants to be clever, human, and flat-out entertaining all at once: a 72-hour chess match where every move reveals character as much as strategy. Johnnie To directs with that signature Hong Kong snap—sleek pacing, playful misdirection, and bursts of tension that arrive like a held breath—while never losing sight of the quiet ache underneath the game. The real hook is the duel between Andy Lau and Lau Ching-Wan, two stars sparring with charm and intelligence, turning a cop-and-criminal setup into something unexpectedly warm, funny, and poignant without ever going soft. If you prefer your action loud and your villains simple, this might feel too nimble and sly, but if you like thrillers that grin while they tighten the vise, it’s a terrific ride.
Running Out of Time wants to be a slick, cat-and-mouse Hong Kong thriller where a principled negotiator is forced into a morally messy game with a dying criminal, and on that level it’s an appealing setup with two charismatic leads. The problem is it often asks you to swallow one too many convenient disguises, lucky breaks, and “just trust the plan” logic, and the middle stretch can feel like it’s spinning its wheels before it remembers it needs to escalate. The script also leans a bit hard on its big gestures, which makes the climax feel louder than it is clever. If you enjoy Johnnie To’s style, Andy Lau vs. Lau Ching-wan chemistry, and a bittersweet crime-story vibe, you’ll still find plenty to like—but if plausibility and tight pacing are deal-breakers for you, this may test your patience.
