What people think about Oklahoma!
Oklahoma! (1999) is that rare revival that doesn’t just polish a classic—it rethinks it, letting Rodgers & Hammerstein’s sunlit melodies cast longer, more intriguing shadows. Trevor Nunn’s staging feels intimate and sharply theatrical, with choreography and camera placement that pull you right into the sweat, flirtation, and unease of frontier life rather than keeping it at a safe, proscenium distance. Hugh Jackman brings buoyant charm and a clear, confident voice to Curly, while Josefina Gabrielle and Shuler Hensley give the love triangle real emotional weight, making the romance feel earned and the tension genuinely unsettling. If you want your musicals bright and purely comforting, the darker edges and occasional menace may surprise you—but if you’re open to a classic with bite, this is a rewarding, beautifully performed night at the theater you can watch at home.
This filmed version of Trevor Nunn’s West End Oklahoma! is clearly trying to drag a sunny, iconic musical into darker, more psychologically charged territory, and it does have the nerve to make Jud genuinely unsettling rather than just “the bad guy.” The trade-off is that if you’re coming for the warm, folksy comfort of the classic, the mood can feel heavy and the staging intentionally stark, with some sexual imagery and a few violent scuffles that can jar against the sing-along reputation. Hugh Jackman brings charm and vocal swagger, and Shuler Hensley’s intensity is a real asset, but the whole thing plays more like a tense chamber drama that happens to sing than a big, crowd-pleasing spectacle. If you want traditional, brightly colored musical escapism, this probably isn’t your Oklahoma; if you like your classics reinterpreted with bite, it may land better.
