Taboo (1999)
Set during Japan's Shogun era, this film looks at life in a samurai compound where young warriors are trained in swordfighting. A number of interpersonal conflicts are brewing in the training room, all centering on a handsome young samurai named Sozaburo Kano. The school's stern master can choose to intervene, or to let Kano decide his own path.
What people think about Taboo
Taboo is special because it treats the samurai world not as a playground for heroics, but as a pressure cooker of ritual, desire, and unspoken rules—shot with a cool, stylized elegance that feels both classical and quietly dangerous. In a secluded training compound, the arrival of the mesmerizing Sozaburo Kano sends discipline and loyalty into a slow, inexorable wobble, and the film turns that tension into an intriguing thriller of glances, silences, and sudden steel. Ryuhei Matsuda gives a stellar, enigmatic performance, and director Nagisa Oshima keeps everything polished and purposeful, letting atmosphere do as much work as action. It’s not for viewers craving constant swordplay or easy answers, but if you want a samurai drama with daring themes and a haunting, controlled vibe, this one lingers.
Taboo is clearly aiming for a moody, elegant study of desire, discipline, and power inside a rigid samurai world, where tension simmers more than it explodes. The problem is that it often keeps you at arm’s length: the pacing is deliberately passive, the characters can feel emotionally sealed off, and the intrigue doesn’t always build into something satisfying if you’re expecting a punchy thriller. If you need clear motivations, catharsis, or frequent action beats, this may come off cold and even a bit bloodless. But if you’re drawn to stylized period atmosphere, quiet psychological unease, and themes that linger rather than resolve neatly, there’s craft here to appreciate.
