Pearl Harbor (2001)

Pearl Harbor is built for the big screen: a sweeping, old-fashioned Hollywood melodrama dropped into a thunderous war spectacle, with Michael Bay staging the infamous attack as a sustained, nerve-rattling set piece of fire, steel, and human panic. Even if you think you know the history, the film’s craftsmanship—its roaring sound design, muscular aerial choreography, and soaring score—pulls you into the moment with visceral immediacy, then softens the edges with a glossy romantic glow. Ben Affleck, Josh Hartnett, and Kate Beckinsale bring earnest, star-powered sincerity to the love triangle, giving the movie a pulse between the explosions. It’s undeniably sentimental and sometimes operatic in its emotions, so if you prefer restrained war dramas you may roll your eyes—but if you want a grand, immersive, tear-and-thunder blockbuster, it delivers.
