Awake (2007)

Awake takes a primal fear—being conscious but helpless—and turns it into a tightly wound thriller that feels like a nightmare you can’t wake up from. Joby Harold keeps the vibe quietly ominous, letting tension and creeping dread do most of the work while the medical setting adds unnervingly specific, you-are-there details that make every scene feel immediate. As the story narrows around shifting loyalties and high-stakes decisions, it delivers a steady drip of surprises that keep you leaning forward, trying to get one step ahead. It’s not for the squeamish—there’s some graphic surgical imagery and harsh language—but if you like sleek, twisty suspense with a killer premise, it’s an easy watch to recommend.

Awake is clearly trying to turn a genuinely terrifying medical phenomenon into a slick, twisty conspiracy thriller, and the premise is strong enough to hook you fast. The problem is it leans so hard on soap-opera reveals and credibility-stretching turns that the suspense starts feeling manufactured rather than earned, and the uneven editing doesn’t help the tension build cleanly. Performances are serviceable but rarely elevate the material, so if you’re allergic to melodrama posing as a grounded thriller, you’ll likely roll your eyes more than bite your nails. Still, if you can tolerate (or even enjoy) pulpy, high-concept nonsense and don’t mind graphic surgical imagery, there’s a watchable guilty-pleasure angle here.
